Sildenafil is a medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
Sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis. This happens because it inhibits PDE5, an enzyme that breaks down cyclic GMP. Cyclic GMP is a substance that relaxes the muscles in the penis, allowing blood vessels to dilate and facilitating an erection.
To be effective, sexual stimulation is necessary. Sildenafil doesn’t cause erections on its own; it simply enhances the body’s natural response to sexual stimulation.
The recommended starting dose is typically 50mg, taken as needed, approximately one hour before sexual activity. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your individual needs and health conditions.
Common side effects include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, and visual disturbances. These are usually mild and temporary. Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Sildenafil interacts with certain medications, particularly nitrates. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking to avoid potential adverse interactions. Discuss your medical history with your doctor before starting Sildenafil, especially if you have heart problems, liver or kidney disease, or a history of vision problems.
