Aftercare and Follow-up Following a Medication Abortion

Rest for the first 24 hours. Drink plenty of fluids. Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for cramping and pain as directed. You may experience bleeding, similar to a heavy period, lasting up to several weeks. Use sanitary pads; tampons are not recommended.

Managing Bleeding and Cramping

Expect bleeding and cramping for several days, possibly up to three weeks. The bleeding might be heavier than a normal period. If you soak more than two super-plus sanitary pads an hour for more than two hours, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Severe pain that ibuprofen or acetaminophen doesn’t relieve also requires immediate medical attention. Contact your provider if you experience fever (over 100.4°F or 38°C), chills, or foul-smelling discharge.

Follow-up Appointments

Your provider will likely schedule a follow-up appointment, usually within one to two weeks, to confirm the pregnancy has ended. This is a standard procedure, and your provider will discuss the results with you. If you have any concerns before your scheduled follow-up, reach out to your provider without delay.

Birth Control

Discuss your birth control options with your healthcare provider. They can help you choose a method that’s right for you. Remember, you can become pregnant again soon after a medication abortion.

Mental Health Support

Many women experience a range of emotions after a medication abortion. If you need support, don’t hesitate to contact a counselor, therapist, or support group. Your provider can provide referrals if necessary. Taking care of your mental wellbeing is important.
